Do Pets Grieve Over the Passing of Other Pets?

The answer is a resounding “Yes.” And it’s not just pets.

In the wild, many animals, including elephants and dolphins, have elaborate “funeral” rituals for members of their packs. They can also experience depression, but though they don’t “process” grief the way humans do, science has shown grief is part of an animal’s natural life cycle.

Other studies have shown how pets respond to loss, and insights into animal and human behavior reveal ways for pets to cope and move forward.
